May the 12th is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. Fibromyalgia is one of those hidden illnesses, there is nothing to tell you one person has it over another. However, the pain and fatigue for someone living with Fibro is very real!

Invisible illnesses are sometimes the hardest to live with and understand. For those dealing with something you can’t see, there is a constant internal fight between justifying yourself to those around you and knowing you shouldn’t have too.Fibromyalgia awareness day

Fibromyalgia – what is it?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread pain and profound fatigue. The pain tends to be felt as diffuse aching or burning, often described as head to toe. It may be worse at some times than at others. It may also change location. Usually becoming more severe in parts of the body that are used the most. The fatigue ranges from feeling tired to the exhaustion of a flu-like illness. It may come and go and people can suddenly feel drained of all energy – as if someone just “pulled the plug”.


Imagine just for one moment suffering in this way. Then imagine people rolling their eyes, sighing and telling you to pull yourself together. Many of us have a nasty habit of needing to see it to believe it. This often leads to fair judgements of others. I myself am guilty of this. My mum lives with fibromyalgia and for a long time I just didn’t understand and in fairness, neither did she. Mum just knew she was in pain and I just thought, ‘surely it can’t be that bad or the doctors would be able to tell her what it was’.

I should have been far less judgemental than I was, especially as I have invisible illnesses of my own. This is why I am choosing to highlight Fibromyalgia in this week’s blog.


I know for my mum when the pain is bad getting out of the house is out of the question but there are days when it’s not so bad. On these days going out and walking can aggravate the pain so shopmobility is a great solution. For my mum, a long car journey could be uncomfortable. Follow that up by walking around the shops and it could lead to a flare-up.

However, mobility scooters especially those based in shopping centres which have smooth floors can be a great way to alleviate the pressure and keep the pain at bay.

So if you are living with Fibro or you know someone who is let them know about shopmobility and how it may help them continue days out even if they aren’t feeling 100%.
