Last week we announced the impending closure of Shrewsbury Shopmobility this week we are shouting about one of our more unusual members. Event mobility. Event mobility are a charitable organisation who loan wheelchairs and scooters to those who need them at events across the UK. This year they are heading to Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials -1st to 5th May, RHS Malvern Spring Show –  9th to 12th May, Royal Cheshire Show – 18th – 19th June 2019 to name a few. (more…)

Shrewsbury Shopmobility to close after 23 years

It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Shrewsbury Shopmobility. After 23 years in service, the scheme will close its doors for the final time in June 2019.

A decline in usage and a lack of funding has led to the closure.

Gillian Bradley, coordinator for Shopmobility Shrewsbury, said

“We have served the town for 23 years and there are lots of factors that have led to this very hard decision,” she said. “It seems the service is just not needed as it was. (more…)

More training needed in shopping areas where shopmobility exists.

An incident recently occurred in a shopping mall where a shopmobility scooter user tried to navigate a narrow aisle at the back of a shop. The gap was insufficient for the scooter to pass through easily. The result was the rider knocked into a stool which caused an older person to be knocked off the stool and seriously injured. Last week Nottinghamshire police were called to an area of the A52, a busy dual carriageway, at around 7 pm, wherein complete darkness a female scooter owner was travelling down the dual carriageway with no lights and no flashing amber. Luckily, no one was harmed and the woman made it home safely. However, the issue of mobility scooters, which are unable to travel above 8mph, on dual carriageways remains. (more…)
